Dereck entered the MTC on October 1, 2008. It was a very horrible, yet wonderful day. His MTC companion was Elder Gardner from Texas. He really learned to love this gentle giant. (He was 6'4" and 300 lbs. He also insisted on taking the top bunk which Dereck would pray would hold each night as he crawled in to the bottom bunk!) Dereck wrote some wonderful letters and expressed his gratitude for all of the support he was receiving! It was incredible to see the spiritual growth he was experiencing. He was able to see his good friend, Nate Larsen, who was also in the MTC. He made many friends while he was there. He grew particularly close to some missionaries who were heading to Samoa. He said it was very sad to say goodbye to them when he left the MTC. He departed for Phoenix Arizona with 17 other missionaries on October 21, 2008.
